Rosetta Stone of Preschoolese

June 17, 2008

Macaroni ma-cheese = Macaroni and cheese

Circle Soup = Spaghetti O’s

Tindo DS = Nintendo DS

Doll waffle = Waffles with pictures of Barbie on them

Brooming = Sweeping the floor with a broom (actually makes sense)

smacks = Gummy snacks (I pretend to smack her when she asks for it)

There are many more. I’ll post them when I hear them again. Keep in mind, she knows how to say all of these correctly. She just prefers her way and will violently oppose you if you try to correct her.

Tall Tales

June 4, 2008

Or lies if you prefer:

Grandfather: “If you’re good, maybe I’ll give you two some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

My 4-year-old daughter: “I don’t like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

Grandfather: “Yes you do.”

Daughter: “No I don’t because they make me throw up.”

Not true of course.

My daughter has a boyfriend

July 21, 2007

Pixel from Lazy TownI prayed this day would never come. Not only did it come, but years sooner than I ever imagined! My three-year-old daughter has a boyfriend…ahem, well, he’s a boy who happens to be her friend…er, OK, and he’s imaginary, but still!

Yes, sweet little Zahra has entered the world of imaginary friends. This one is from a TV show called Lazy Town, but apparently, he’s now bumming off of us in our own house. The nerve!

“Don’t sit there mommy! Pixel’s sitting there.”

Pixel. What kind of name is Pixel?

Your Mother's Right Over You

May 13, 2007

It has been frequently narrated that the 4th Imam of the Prophet’s immaculate household, Ali ibn al-Husayn, known as Zayn al-‘Abideen said:

“The right of your mother is that you know that she carried you where no one carries anyone, she gave to you of the fruit of her heart that which no one gives to anyone, and she protected you with all of her organs. She was highly delighted, happy, and eager in enduring the harm, pains, heaviness, and grief until the hand of power saved her from you and took you out to this earth. She did not care if she went hungry as long as you ate, if she was thirsty as long as you drank, if she was naked as long as you were clothed, if she was in the sun as long as you were in the shade, if she was miserable as long as you were happy. Her abdomen was your housing, her lap your seat, her breast your nourishment, and her soul was your fort. She gave up sleep for your sake, she protected you from heat and cold, all in order that you might belong to her. You should thank her for all of that, but you will not be able to demonstrate your gratitude, except through God’s help and granting of success (tawfeeq).”

Risalat al-Huquq (Treatise on Rights) by Imam ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Fatimah bint Muhammad (peace be upon them)

Happy Mother’s Day.
